The Cisco ASR 9900 Route Processor 3 (ASR 9900 RP3) represents the latest advancement in system processors for the Cisco ASR 9912 Router and ASR 9922 Router. It supports high-density 100 and 400 Gigabit Ethernet line cards and maintains compatibility with the Cisco ASR 9000 Series third-generation line cards.

Designed to meet the demands of modern wireline, Data-Center-Interconnect (DCI), and mobile aggregation applications, the architecture of the Cisco ASR 9900 RP3 enables new programmable deployment models and the convergence of Layer 2 and Layer 3 services.

The ASR 9900 RP3 integrates Cisco IOS XR Software, renowned for its carrier-class capabilities, into the Carrier Ethernet edge. This operating system supports true software process modularity, ensuring each process operates within its own protected memory space. This includes individual routing protocols, along with multiple instances of control, data, and management planes. Additionally, the software facilitates distributed route processing.

The Cisco A99-RP3-TR is engineered to meet the demanding requirements of today's and tomorrow's video, cloud, and mobile services, offering high scalability, performance, and rapid convergence. Its features ensure exceptional scale, service adaptability, and high availability:

  • Switch Fabric Architecture and Cisco ASR 9900 Fabric Cards:
    • Employing a distributed switch fabric architecture.
    • Control of up to seven Cisco ASR 9900 Switch Fabric Cards, ensuring scalability and high availability on Cisco ASR 9922 Router and ASR 9912 Router chassis.
    • Utilizing a multistage low-latency nonblocking architecture.
    • Providing service intelligence and traffic prioritization.
  • Superior Network Timing Capabilities:
    • Supporting Global Positioning System (GPS) via Time of Day (ToD), 10-MHz, and 1-PPS interfaces.
    • Offering Centralized Building Integrated Timing Supply (BITS).
    • Facilitating Precision Time Protocol (PTP), or IEEE 1588-2008, through dedicated 10-Mbps and 100-Mbps Ethernet ports.
