The Cisco Catalyst 8000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN/WAN Modules provide high-density connectivity options, including Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP+ and SFP) and copper (RJ-45) interfaces, supporting 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps, and 10 Gbps Ethernet speeds, for the Catalyst 8300 and 8200 Series Edge Platforms.
The C-NIM-4X is a next-generation 1G/10G LAN/WAN module featuring local Layer 2 switching capabilities across all four ports. This module offers an affordable, low-density 4-port Layer 2 LAN switch, capable of switching four Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP)/SFP+ ports at speeds up to 10 Gbps. Additionally, the two highest-numbered ports can be configured for native Layer 3 operation, providing full feature parity with the router’s embedded WAN ports.
The C-NIM-4X module delivers high-speed WAN connectivity through its four ports, which support Serial Gigabit Media-Independent Interface (SGMII)/1000BASE-X-based SFP and 10GBASE-R-based SFP+ pluggables. It also supports a 100-Mbps optic pluggable connection using the GLC-GE-100FX SFP transceiver. The four 1G/10G WAN ports connect to the backplane via a single 10-Gbps-capable internal link, creating an oversubscribed connection of 4 to 1 when used at full capacity. The C-NIM-4X is compatible with Catalyst 8300 Series platforms but is not supported on Catalyst 8200 Series platforms.
